Chapter 16

Still a Sperm

“I thought you two had sailed back to shore,” Karani Kerrington joked from the next table.

Isaac laughed. “We’re not going anywhere as long as food is onboard.” He was right, because the food turned out to be awesome, and by the end of dinner Terah and Karani were sitting with us. In an effort to curtail the conversation with them, Isaac gave Karani a card and said, “Let’s stay in touch.”

“What?” Karani yelled. “I thought I knew you.” He studied Isaac carefully. “You were on the church channel a few weeks ago.”

“Yes I was,” Isaac answered all smiles. My mom mentioned something about cameras in the church but she didn’t elaborate. I guess partly because she didn’t agree with them being there. “TBN broadcasts live from my church every third Sunday morning.”

When it came to preaching Reverend Dr. Isaac M. Flack was just as powerful as Bishop Eddie Long, Bishop Clarence E. McClendon, and Dr. Creflo A. Dollar. But the two bishops and the doctor had nothing on Isaac. Bishop Long had the body, Bishop McClendon was fine but a bit too pretty, and Dr. Dollar, well he looked as good as one could look after being given a first name like Creflo. Other than trying to win souls I could see TBN’s reasons for broadcasting from Mount Pleasant; look at the pastor, he had to pull up their ratings.

Karani stretched his hand out and shook Isaac’s. “Man, you tore it up, almost had me on my knees,” he said with a smile. “Just don’t start wearing those gowns like McClendon. I think there is something funny about that.” We all laughed. “How long have you been a pastor?”

“Fifteen years.”

“Wow.” Karani did some mental math and when it didn’t add up he said, “What a minute, how old are you?”

“Forty-five,” Isaac said proudly.

“Man, you don’t look a day older than me.” Karani was loud. “God really has your back.”

“Yes, He does, and I hope He always will,” Isaac said thankfully.

The topic slowly focused on something most churchgoers tried to avoid talking to each other about, tithing. Karani mentioned that he doesn’t tithe at his church because he doesn’t think that the money is being used in the right way.

“What the money is being used for has absolutely nothing to do with you, Karani.” Isaac was taking him to school. “You must make wise decisions concerning the money God is blessing you with.” Isaac seemed to glow when he talked about God. He spoke with a smile and his eagerness was very impressive. “The first ten percent of any financial income you receive is holy. If you don’t tithe, I guarantee that you won’t enjoy that portion of your income because it’s being misused. You’ll spend it fixing something that suddenly broke around the house. You might have to use it to pay a traffic ticket, pay a mechanic to fix your car or even at the doctor’s office.”

“Will a man rob God?” Karani jokingly quoted a portion of Malachi 3:8.
